Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee (CEEA)

As established in Chapter VI, Article 37 of Royal Decree 53/2013, the functions of the bodies responsible for animal welfare are as follows:

  • Advise staff who work with animals on issues relating to animal welfare, regarding their acquisition, housing, care and use.
  • Advise staff on applying the replacement, reduction and refinement requirement, and keep them informed of technical and scientific advances in applying that requirement.
  • Establish and review internal operational processes regarding the control, communication and monitoring of information related to animal welfare.
  • Advise on rehoming or adoption schemes, including the proper socialisation of animals to be rehomed or put up for adoption.
  • For users, it will also draw up the report referred to in Article 33.1 of Royal Decree 53/2013 and monitor projects, taking into account their effect on the animals used, as well as determine and assess the elements that best contribute to replacement, reduction and refinement. In addition to the functions set out in Royal Decree 53/2013, the CEEA will also carry out the following functions:
  • Assess any other research project that may directly affect animal welfare.
  • Ensure compliance with good practice in animal research and experimentation.
  • Draw up reports for the governing bodies of the IIS Puerta de Hierro on ethical issues related to any of the above points.
  • In addition, any other functions assigned to it by current legislation.
