The Ophthalmology Research Group of the Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro-Majadahonda focuses on translational research in imaging diagnosis of retinal and optic nerve conditions. The arrival of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), in both its swept-source (SS) and spectral-domain (SD) versions, has revolutionised the diagnosis and monitoring of retinal and optic nerve diseases, including all forms of glaucoma. SS-OCT and SD-OCT allow a thorough and detailed study of diseases of the retina, choroid, optic nerve and the retina-vitreous interface. They also provide detailed monitoring of the response to different medical and surgical treatments. The group specialises in the study of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, especially diabetic macular oedema (DME), glaucoma and, above all, myopic maculopathy, the main disease of pathological myopia. These four diseases are the leading causes of legal blindness in our setting.

Wide-field retinography imaging has also been incorporated, allowing the retina to be analysed and studied in a single image covering almost its entire surface.

OCT angiography, or OCTA, allows the retinal and choroidal circulation to be studied with segmentation of the different plexuses - two in the retina and three in the choroid - with a level of detail not previously achieved and without the need to inject dyes or contrast agents into the bloodstream.

Lastly, we will temporarily have the option of performing wide-field OCT, obtaining scans 23 mm long in a single image, compared to 12 mm for SS-OCT and 9 mm for SD-OCT.
