The Neurosurgery/Neuroscience Research Group was founded with an eminently translational profile. Although its members are primarily clinical neurosurgeons, we all maintain a research focus on basic Neurosciences, such as Neurophysiology or Genetics, among others. This is reflected in our lines of research, which include, for example, hypoperfusion-reperfusion and neuroprotection of the Central Nervous System, or the genetic study of glioblastoma multiforme. There are numerous publications of international impact on both topics, especially on normal perfusion pressure breakthrough syndrome associated with cerebral vascular malformations, for which we have created an experimental model for its study and subsequent pharmacological treatment. Regarding the genetics of glioblastoma multiforme, it should be noted that it has emerged as a new paradigm in neurosurgical pathology, with the highest mortality of all conditions treated by neurosurgeons, brain cancer. Unfortunately, its prognosis has barely improved in the last 50 years, but knowledge of its genetics opens the door to new targeted therapies, including immunotherapy. Another of our active lines of research could be described mainly as clinical: the innovative treatment of vertebral fractures. Osteoporosis, associated with increased average life expectancy, has made these fractures one of the most frequent conditions faced by neurosurgeons.
