GIMIR was formally established as a multidisciplinary research group in 2008, coinciding with the start of activities at Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro at its Majadahonda site, and as a result of the new research coordination policy of the Internal Medicine Department, brought about by the actual integration, into a single department, of the three Internal Medicine departments that existed at the former site of Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro in Madrid. However, the research experience of some GIMIR members dates back to the work carried out (together with other researchers) over the last twenty years at the former site of Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro in Madrid.

GIMIR members currently work in an organised manner with objectives defined by those responsible for the different lines of research, coordinated by the Group leader. GIMIR collaborates with other national and international research groups through cooperative projects in clinical and basic research.

The Internal Medicine research group has a laboratory with the facilities and instruments necessary to carry out applied research. In addition, GIMIR has a guaranteed continuous supply of biological samples and clinical data for carrying out applied clinical and basic research, derived from its clinical activity in the areas on which its research focuses.

The Internal Medicine research group has obtained continuous, stable and diversified funding for its research, from competitive projects funded by public and private institutions, and research contracts with the pharmaceutical industry.

The Internal Medicine Research group has had, since 2008, the UAM-Fundación Lair Sponsored Chair “Teaching and research in immunologically-based diseases”.
