The Spanish Group of Lung Cancer presented the results of the DUMAS clinical trial at the World Conference on Lung Cancer last September. This study evaluates a new therapeutic strategy for patients with Pancoast tumor, a rare and locally invasive type of lung cancer.
Dr. Mariano Provencio, president of the Spanish Group for Lung Cancer (GECP) and scientific director of the Arana Puerta de Hierro-Segovia Health Research Institute (IDIPHISA), presented the results of the DUMAS clinical trial in Seoul during the World Conference on Lung Cancer 2026. This exploratory study analyzes the use of chemotherapy and immunotherapy with nivolumab before surgery in patients diagnosed with Pancoast tumor.

The study showed a 78% overall survival and 75% patients free of disease progression at 24 months. The researchers observed that 58% of the patients achieved a complete pathological response, meaning that no viable tumor cells were identified in the extracted tissue after surgery. Additionally, high rates of complete resections were achieved: 86% of the patients who underwent surgery achieved a complete removal of the tumor.
These results are especially relevant, since the Pancoast tumor is a rare and locally invasive type of lung cancer that can affect nearby structures such as vertebrae or ribs, making its treatment difficult.
Although long-term follow-up is necessary to assess the impact of this work on patient survival, the results presented by the GECP propose a new strategy that could transform the therapeutic approach to the Pancoast tumor, reinforcing the innovative role of Spanish clinical research.
