Dr. Provencio is Head of the Medical Oncology Service at the Puerta de Hierro University Hospital y Professor of Medical Oncology at the Autonomous University of Madrid. He has extensive research activity with more than 200 studies focused primarily on lung cancer and lymphoma. He has more than 500 publications; 71 books/book chapters, 585 conference presentations, and 440 invited lectures and presentations. He has been cited more than 31,000 times; has an h-index of 72 and an i10 index of 290. As a Full Professor of Medicine, he has recognized 5 decades of research, 2 quinquennia of teaching, and has supervised 22 doctoral theses.
It is also President of the Spanish Group of Lung Cancer (GECP), Corresponding Academician of the Royal National Academy of Medicine, President of Spanish Group of Onco-Lymphatic Tumors (GOTEL) and Scientific Director of the Puerta de Hierro Institute of Biomedical Research (IDIPHISA) which houses 44 research groups within its 5 research areas and 380 researchers who have received public funding for 77 R&D projects in competitive calls in 2021.
Dr. Provencio is the leader of the Translational Research Group in Lung Cancer of IDIPHISA, a multidisciplinary group whose main achievements have been:
- Neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The group has pioneered establishing the important benefit that patients with operable stage lung cancer obtain from neoadjuvant chemotherapy with chemioimmunotherapy (Provencio M et al Lancet 2020, Provencio M et al J Clin Oncol 2022, Provencio M et al N Eng J Med 2023, Provencio M et al Lancet 2024). The group’s research has not only led to the approval of this treatment regimen by the FDA (2022) and the EMA (2023), but has also brought about a paradigm shift in the management of these patients.
- Clinical utility of liquid biopsy. The group has published a significant number of papers in this field, where it has also been a pioneer (Provencio M et al Eur J Cancer 2021, Sánchez Herrero et al Clin Chem 2022, Sánchez-Herrero E Mol Oncol 2021, Provencio M. et al. J Clin Oncol 2022, among others; see IP CV). Consequently, the group has implemented new diagnostic procedures, both for its own patients and external patients (through the diagnostic platform 1dentify, funded by AstraZeneca), becoming the first national public hospital accredited by ENAC, following the ISO 15189 standard, for the study of biomarkers in liquid biopsies. Furthermore, in this area, the group has collaborated with several biotechnology companies (Atrys Health, Sophia Genetics) and basic research groups from the CNIO, CBM, CNB (Red Tentáculos RED2018-102411-T) to develop cutting-edge technology.
- Tumor microenvironment. The group has generated knowledge about the biological determinants that trigger the immune response when tumors are exposed to immunotherapy-based treatments (Provencio M, JAMA Oncol 2022, Casarrubios M J Immunother Cancer. 2022; Casarrubios M, Clin Cancer Res. 2021, Laza-Briviesca R Clin Transl Med. 2021). As well as the underlying molecular mechanisms of serious adverse effects (Sierra-Rodero B, J Immunother cancer. 2021).
- Big data in healthcare practice: Dr. Provencio has been the IP of several EU-funded projects (UNCAN-Connect, CLARIFY, P4-LUCAT, BigMedylitics, IASIS) focused on the application of Big Data tools for the exploitation of clinical and molecular data in patients with cancer with the aim of improving both survival and quality of life (Jannik et al. JCO Clin Cancer Inform 2023, Torrente et al. Cancers 2022, and Torrente et al. Clin Med 2022; among others).
