Background
Both osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases develop due to common causes such as tobacco use, lack of physical activity and an unhealthy diet, as well as low production of oestrogen and other hormones in the case of post-menopausal women. Both types of disease considerably increase mortality rates and reduce quality of life. Dairy products with added plant sterols, developed to reduce cardiovascular risk factors, are currently available on the market. In addition, recent epidemiological studies link diets rich in carotenoids with good bone health. However, there are no products that can improve and prevent osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease simultaneously
La invención
The present invention relates to a composition or edible product that has a synergistic effect on osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. The product has demonstrated its efficacy in post-menopausal women, a group at high risk of bone demineralisation and the development of cardiovascular disease. This composition is rich in two components simultaneously, one with known beneficial effects for osteoporosis and the other for cardiovascular disease. The composition developed has demonstrated a beneficial effect on markers reduction in cardiovascular risk and on bone remodelling by reducing levels of cholesterol and of both formation and resorption markers, which results in a lower bone turnover rate and a slowdown in bone remodelling.
