The Biobank is currently implementing ISO 20387:2018.

A la hora de confiar en un biobanco, it is essential that its activity be based on the pillars of quality, traceability and confidentialitythat it have competent technical staff, that it have the necessary and appropriate equipment and infrastructure to carry out its activities, that it apply valid and appropriate methods and procedures for the collection, acquisition, preparation, preservation, analysis, storage and distribution of biological material and its associated information, and that it have controls in place to guarantee the quality of the whole process, given that biobanks play an essential role in research and development in fields such as health, food or the pharmaceutical sector, among others.

Furthermore, biobanks currently play, and increasingly so, a key role in biomedical research, as it makes use of the clinical information associated with the biological samples they hold, so it is essential that the service they provide offers guarantees of technical competence in the management, receipt, processing, storage and transfer of samples, as well as their associated data, to researchers in biomedical studies.

In this regard, accreditation provides the necessary confidence to professionals in the different fields of application, as it is the internationally established tool for demonstrating, among other things, that these organisations are technically competent and, therefore, reliable.

The reference standard for the accreditation of biobanks that manage biological material from multicellular organisms and microorganisms and that are intended for research in different fields is ISO 20387 en la que se establecen los “general requirements for the technical competence, impartiality and operation of biobanks, including quality control requirements to ensure the appropriate quality of collections of biological material and associated data”.
